What it is
Part 1 of a two-part training session recorded by Marakana and published by InfoQ, with Marko Gargenta teaching how to build Android from source and then build a custom ROM. It covers machine setup, git and repo, the project layout, and customizing the build by adding or removing apps and changing startup.

Actually you cannot load only a single project into eclipse since the whole OS tree is mutually dependent, you have to checkout the whole source code, make a compile and then copy the .classpath in the root folder of the build and create a java project using this classpath. and ONLY then will you be able to load a project. however note that the AOSP compiles only on 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 (version and distro is mostly because of library versions and dependencies, I've seen people do it on fedora and suse) the compile is horrific however you ARE compiling an OS from scratch so ... it takes about 5 hours on a dualcore pentium u 3gigs of ram.. and about 20 mins on i7 with running make -j16 after im

Sorry this is a late answer, but recently I've stumbled on a very helpful set of videos on this subject from Marko Gargenta -- it was very helpful to me understanding the different portions of android and how to get started with creating a custom ROM image: Android Internals Part 1: [this video] and Part 2: [LINK]

The Android NDK is for writing application code in C or C++. What you want is to build your own version of the Android firmware; it is a completely separate issue. Have a look at this [this video] for starters.

this is a good tutorial [this video] that will guide you towards step by step creation of custom Andriod ROM. I could not understand when you say about editing the file for RO M creation , maybe if you could explain more that might help me understand your point.

We are working on experimental project and we need to build own Android and replace it with our own UI for Vodafone Smart Tab which comes with Android 3.2. As a resource I am using [LINK] and [this video] . My Questions are: Will I need some special vendor code to port the build to Vodafone Smart Tab? Will there be some problem replacing the common Android UI? I need to replace the system UI not just create some application. Will I be able to use the latest Android version or do I have to use Android 3.2 that is originally distributed with the device?
