What it is
A short Android Developers DevByte, presented by Chris Banes, introducing the new ActionBarCompat (appcompat-v7) support library that brings the Action Bar to Android 2.1 and newer. It walks through adding the library as a dependency, then updating resources, themes and code.

Now, you can also use ActionBarCompat library from Android Support package. It's v7 version now supports ActionBar [LINK] . Android dev team published a really useful introduction video video about using ActionBarCompat [this video]

I would suggest watching the Intro to ActionBarCompat [this video] . You also need to ensure that your application (or specific Activities) uses an AppCompat theme. For example, you can set `android:theme="@android:style/Theme.AppCompat"` for the ActionBarCompat's Holo style. There are also the standard light and light with dark ActionBar variants.

Add a new namespace 'myapp' or whatever like so <menu xmlns:android=" [LINK] " xmlns:myapp=" [LINK] " > Use that namespace for searchview and shareprovider. see below Change android:actionProviderClass="android.support.v7.widget.ShareActionProvider" to myapp:actionProviderClass="android.support.v7.widget.ShareActionProvider" android:actionViewClass="android.support.v7.widget.SearchView" to myapp:actionViewClass="android.support.v7.widget.SearchView" Also change namespace for showAsaction to myapp. android:showAsAction="ifRoom|collapseActionView" to myapp:showAsAction="ifRoom|collapseActionView" Hope that solves it. Finally solved, after one day and one night wasted! Most of the problem was that the app was also implementing an ActionBar and that needed more migration effort. I had to change some other bits to use the support libraries (v4 and v7), mostly: everything from Support Library Setup [LINK] (see V7 with resources + using APIs) plus everything from Chris's video about AppCompat [this video] plus be careful to examine every error and warning in Eclipse Code changes in Java files: << import android.app.ActionBar; << import android.app.FragmentTransaction; --- >> import android.support.v7.app.ActionBar; >> import android.support.v4.app.FragmentTransaction; << public class MainActivity extends FragmentA

Today I had the same problem and I think I solved it. It turns out I did couple of things that were not exactly as per the ActionBarCompat contract: Each activity that uses the ActionBarCompat should extend ActionBarActivity [LINK] instead of FragmentActivity directly Each activity that uses the ActionBarCompat should declare its theme as inheriting from the ActionBarCompat themes. Both of those I found watching the explanation video [this video] from Google. Now my searchView is not null anymore.

You need to extend to ActionBarActivity and add Theme.AppCompat theme. See this video from Android Team [this video]
