Why Stack Overflow recommends it

Stack Overflow users link it when asked how to start or track a Google+ Hangout from a website, because it shows the Hangout App pattern that sends the hangout URL back to your server.

What it is

A 2012 tutorial by Allen "Prisoner" Firstenberg showing how to build a helpdesk-style Google+ Hangout that is launched from your own website. It uses the Hangout API and a Hangout App that reports back to your server.

This YouTube video discusses how to do what you want: [this video] The general procedure will be for the initiator to create a hangout using a link on your website and, as part of creating it, starting up a hangout app. This app sends the URL for the hangout back to your website where it can be sent to the attendees.

There is currently no API that is officially provided that can tell you what hangouts are currently available. If you are interested in seeing one, you may wish to see if the feature has been requested at [LINK] and, if not, request it. Your question, however, seems to have an assumption that I'm not entirely sure is valid. What do you mean by a "permanent hangout"? In general, hangouts are created and destroyed on an ad-hoc basis (although there are some exceptions). One of those exceptions are for hangouts that are tied to calendar events (as you note). In these cases, you can use the Calendar API to get the Event resource and get the hangout URL from that (see [LINK] and related pages for

I think the easier solution would be to go a different route entirely. Instead of trying to get the hangout information via the Google+ post/activity, create a Hangout App that sends the URL for the hangout to your server. Under this scenario, the steps would be one of the two following scenarios. Simple way: User starts a hangout video chat from your website The website link to create it also includes the gid of an app to start when the video chat starts The app sends a message to your website indicating the URL of the hangout that was started Alternate way: User starts a hangout however they want to When they're ready to tell your website, they run the same app The app sends a message to y

There is no official format for Activities that represent a hangout. You can try searching for them using various hashtags, but these tags have changed (frequently) over time and it is not always easy to get the URL for the hangout. Depending on your exact scenario, you can get the URL for the hangout that is in progress and share that (possibly via an Interactive Post [LINK] or just via a link to the hangout), and this will serve as an invitation. Getting the URL for the hangout is fairly easy through a Hangout App, although you will need to have one of the people already in the hangout run that app and report it to your server. Take a look at [this video] for some thoughts about how to write th

It is possible. First you have to write a hangout app to show your questions and to fetch the youtube url and send it to your server. Next, attach your hangout app to your hangout button, so it gets automatically executed everytime a user starts a HoA. your Hangout app will send the youtube url to your server, which you can use to embed in your site. [this video] The above video demonstrates how to write a hangout app and to fetch the youtube url. The problem here is, Since the user starts the hangout ,the video is published through the users google account and you wont have any right over the video. It might cause you some problems in the future :) .

Not really. Launching a Hangout Video Call from your own website is possible, but without special coordination with Google, it will open it in its own window/tab. See [this video] for further information about how to start a Hangout Video Call from your own website.

Cites Prisoner · 2013-06 · Stack Overflow · on “Possible to stream video from Glass to Hangout web player?”

The Hangout API is mostly intended to run apps inside a Hangout Video Call - not display a hangout as part of an external website. There is no public way to skin a Hangout Video Call. The closest you can get are some tricks that are part of the Hangout API to track the URL for the Hangout and be able to have visitors to your website join the same hangout. See [this video] for some details about this, but much of it won't necessarily apply since Glass can't run Hangout apps. If the Hangout is a Hangout on Air, then you could use the various YouTube APIs to embed the player on a website. But Glass can't create a HoA, although it can join them.

Cites Benmay · 2014-08 · Stack Overflow · on “Google Hangout "insecure content" although files are 'https'”

I followed this tutorial and have downloaded the exact same files (I adapted my url's): [this video] When I want to start the hangout with the app my chrome console is saying me this: [blocked] The page at ' [LINK] ' was loaded over HTTPS, but ran insecure content from ' [LINK] ': this content should also be loaded over HTTPS. My server has a verified ssl certificate (test certificate) and is accessible by 'https'. All the url's specified in the different files are beginning with 'https', so I have no idea why this error is happening. I double-checked all files. Or is it because my website just runs on a 'test certificate', but I guess, this can not be the issue. Hope you can help me.
