What it is

A 17-second macro clip from the Red Maggit channel showing the balance wheel and hairspring of a Seiko wristwatch in slow motion. It gives a close view of how the spiral spring breathes in and out as the wheel oscillates.

In a mechanic watch you will find such a coil spring. The spring is fixed in two points (green crosses) and has a spinning attractor at the inside of the spiral which is moving first clockwise and then after clockwise. The effect is a "breathing" coilspring. Its compressing and decrompressing from insideout. I already tried to solve the issue with the "AnimAll" plugin to animate the edit points, but I'm not able to handle the move... If someone want to try, I can send the hairspring Balance Wheel Hairspring Video [this video] [LINK]

It seems the question on how to animate a Balance Spring (or Coil Spring / Hairspring) as used in a watch escapement using Blender has been asked a few times before ( here [LINK] , here [LINK] and here [LINK] ) but unfortunately it has never been answered correctly. Usually the answers involve bone weights or hooks to a spiral curve or mesh to a rotating bone with some falloff. While this looks ok for rotations under 90-110 degrees, the effect breaks apart when using bigger angles: [LINK] The reason is that in the real world the metal doesn't 'stretch' during the rotation, but bends out of its resting shape between minimum and maximum oscillation, pulling the rotations inwards or pushing the

You can see how in the video the coil stretch has an influence on the extension. PLus this whole coil spins along a center point of another object. [this video]
