What it is
A short Gapminder Factpod in which Hans Rosling explains why refugees crossing the Mediterranean by boat cannot simply buy a plane ticket to Europe. It points to EU carrier-sanctions rules that fine airlines for carrying passengers without valid visas.

But even with this increased mobility, the overwhelming majority of refugees just burdens the neighboring countries which are vastly worse equipped to cater to them compared to the rich countries of the global West/North which are shielding themselves from often perfectly legitimate refugee influx. It is a crying shame that has no simple solution. As a teaser I highly recommend the eminent late Hans Rosling's explanation Why Boat Refugees Don't Fly! [this video] . We force refugees to risk their lives with these deals.

@ouflak No, the ongoing tragedy in the Mediterranean is **precisely the consequence** of closing the land routes on the Balkans, which are an example of such deals. The most humanitarian strategy would be to offer asylum seekers an office *in their region*, but that would increase the numbers more than is deemed acceptable. Switzerland did that for a while and then abandoned it again. Btw., did you watch the Hans Rosling video [this video] ?

The obvious answer Repeal Dublin III and replace it with [LINK] . As you ruled that out a) Allow the refugees application in the embassies - not only in the safe EU countries b) Change [this video] so the immigrants can choose their entry-country

@IanKemp "I'm guessing you've never stopped to consider why these "vast" numbers (a few hundred thousand a year against a population of 65 million, LOL) of illegal immigrants are braving hazardous and often fatal treks" 1. "LOL" is not a dignified response to anyone on this subject 2. You've misquoted Valorum anyway. A straw man is also undignified. 3. If you'd researched it instead of considering it without evidence you'd realise it's because of EU law restricting safer ways. [this video]
