It sounds very similar to The Vindicator, a movie from 1986. In that one, a scientist who was working on a robotic suit is killed by his employer when he finds out what the boss is really up to. His remains are integrated into the suit and he's brought back to life as a remote-controlled cyborg. Once his control chip gets destroyed, though, he goes after the bad guys with a vengeance. I don't remember any blinking lights, though. See if the trailer looks familiar.

Are you certain he went out to space? Because The Vindicator [LINK] involves a man killed by his boss and revived as part of his space suit, and there's a scene where he talks to his wife over an intercom. Here's a (non-English) trailer: It's also a bit later than you were thinking with it having been released in 1986.

The Vindicator (1986) An employee of a secret company operation becomes the victim of the company's special weapons project. He is transformed into a robotic killing machine that, because of his programming must destroy anything that comes near him. source [LINK] I remember watching this movie: The main character, Carl is a scientist in a robotic company that also works on a behavioural conditioning, that turns even mildest creature into a violent killer when touched (early scene shows a chimpanzee that turns suddenly violent when touched by a toy truck). Carl's boss Alex arranges an accident in which Carl is officially killed - but in truth Carl is turned into a cyborg with the "kill on tou

It sounds similar to "The Vindicator" (1986). It is very similar to RoboCop, came out in the late '80s, and involves a scientist surviving an explosion in a lab and being turned into a cyborg. The trailer from YouTube is posted below. I'm sorry, the trailer seems to be in French, but you can see the scientist wearing his goggles 10 seconds into the trailer.
