What it is
The first episode of Firebase's 'Get to Know Cloud Firestore' series, presented by Todd Kerpelman. It explains what a NoSQL document database is, how Cloud Firestore organizes data into collections, documents and subcollections, and why data is often duplicated for fast reads.

Syncing data between a relational database and a NoSQL is not a straightforward task and I wouldn't recommend it. Your best option may be to switch from SQLite to Cloud Firestore. There's a fantastic new video from the Firebase team which will help enormously with this task. What is a NoSQL Database? - Get to Know Cloud Firestore Ep.1 [this video]

Some short answers: 1 [LINK] This depends on from where you wan't to interact with firestore. Is it from an Angular app (angularfire2), React (reactfire), Vanilla js (firebase-js-sdk), Node.js serverside (firebase-admin) etc. [2 & 3] Firebase cloud functions take some time to configure, but there is great documentation here [LINK] . It is relatively easy to get started, and the connection to firestore is managed by the firebase-functions sdk. [4] You can simply use that functionality to add data directly from the console, maybe to create some mock data. [5] Storage is for saving photos, videos, large documents, text files etc. [6] In the firebase/firestore universe, a document (together with

I really like the offering that's Cloud Firestore. But does it have an audit trail? Why am I asking? While some use of databases is essentially "state" (e.g. multiplayer games), for other uses also the history matters. Also, at times being able to see the history would be useful for debugging purposes (time travel). So what's the means I would have to ask e.g. "who deleted a value in this document" or "who has touched this doc since its inception"? Do people use additional commentary documents to do this at the application level, or can I just enable a setting somewhere that would create such a document behind the scene, automatically? (I could then describe access rights just as for any oth

Following your comment above when you explain that you "would have to get both the location a user is in and all users in a location.", you have to create two data structures: One for the Users in which you store the current user location: - Users - User_A - Location: Location_1 - User_B - Location: Location_2 and one for the Locations, when you list, for each location the list of users being at this location. - Location_1 - "Users": { "alovelace": true, "ghopper": true, "eclarke": true } With NoSQL database you should not hesitate to duplicate data in such a way your queries are easy and fast to execute. I would suggest thatyou have a look at this recent Firebase video where this approach i

You might want to back up a little and get a better understanding of the type of database that Firestore is. It's NoSQL, so things like rows and columns and tables don't exist. Try this video: [this video] and this one: [LINK] But yes, you could use a cloud function to update a value for you, or you could make the new Spent total calculation within your app logic and when you write the new value for Item 2, also write the new value for Spent total. But mostly, you need to understand how firestore stores your data and how it charges you to retrieve it. You are mostly charged for each read/write request, with much less concern for the actual amount of data you have stored overall. So it will probab

This video may answer my question. ... at 13:31: "this would probably be duplicate data that would live both in the top-level user object and in this individual review and we'll talk in future videos about the best strategies to keep these kinds of things consistent." This leads me to believe that I should duplicate the needed group data under the user and not do the joining bit in the client.
