This is explained in "Time Crash", the 2007 Children in Need special, which takes place immediately before "Voyage of the Damned". The plot of the special revolves around the TARDIS from Tennant's era merging with the TARDIS from Peter Davison's (the Fifth Doctor's) era; Tennant explains how this is possible (emphasis mine): Doctor 5: In a minute we're going to create a black hole strong enough to swallow the entire universe! Doctor: Yeah, that's my fault, actually. I was rebuilding the Tardis, forgot to put the shields back up. Doctor Who "Time Crash" [LINK] At the end of the special, Davison gets a last jab at Tennant, and reminds him that he still hasn't put the shields up: Doctor 5 [OC]:

As you say, Time Crash [this video] had the 5th and 10th Doctors’ TARDISes crash into each other . That’s presumably different from, and much worse than, one TARDIS materialising around another TARDIS, which I’d guess is how Clara and Me managed to transport the Doctor’s TARDIS from London to the desert. I think this is plausible — in our universe, there’s a difference between, for example, a car going inside a truck: [LINK] And a car crashing into a truck: [LINK] I think it’s also significant that the 5th Doctor’s TARDIS and the 10th Doctor’s TARDIS are the same TARDIS at different points in its time stream. My puny human brain can’t begin to work out what sort of paradoxes that might introduce.

In the minisode Time Crash ( available in full on Youtube [this video] ), the Tenth Doctor says to the Fifth Doctor: Oh no, of course! You mostly went hands free, didn't you? Like 'eh, I'm the Doctor, I can save the universe using a kettle and some string, and look at me, I'm wearing a vegetable'. This refers to the fact that the Fifth Doctor didn't use a sonic screwdriver [LINK] for most of his tenure on the show. But is it a reference to anything more specific? Is there actually a Fifth Doctor episode where he saves the universe using "a kettle and some string" , or is Ten just inventing a random example of everyday household objects?
