Possibly Earth Star Voyager [LINK] ? It aired in 1988 as a two-part pilot. The primary crew are teenagers and young adults. Their mission is to a distant Earthlike planet. Also, there are cyborgs involved, though I'm not sure if you could characterize it as a plot to turn the kids into cyborgs. Apparently, the full movie is on YouTube:

Could it be Earth Star Voyager [LINK] ? It's from 1988 and contains many of the features you've mentioned including a cyborg with a light for an eye and a spaceship. You can watch the full movie online below:

Is it possible this is Earth Star Voyager [LINK] ? It was a television movie shown on the Wonderful World of Disney in 1988 as a two part pilot. It has a man who has been converted to a cyborg, Shell, with his face roughly split in half and mechanical augmentations down one side. The action is largely set on first the Vanguard Explorer , then the Earth*Star Voyager . And Dr. Arthur does have an emotional moment with Shell, although I don't see any face-touching and she did not know him from before then. [LINK] However, it was only aired in two parts originally (four parts in a Russian broadcast), is about as half as long as you're thinking at a total of 192 minutes, and the cyborg was create

Finally, a question where the answer is Earth Star Voyager [LINK] (1988)! "Tubular ships", "modular battleship": The enemy ships come together to form a mega-ship, of which the Earth Star Voyager was intended to become a part of. "Lightning cannon": The heroes rig up a solar reflector laser-type weapon, as well as a railgun in an airlock "A person whom they probably picked up along the way built the weapon and dies when he holds a broken panel together by his hands when they fire it.": Yes, except he doesn't die (good guys didn't die in Disney movies back then) The full movie (which was a 2-part pilot) is available on YouTube:

This is almost certainly Earth Star Voyager [LINK] . It has the crew with children: Command cadet Jonathan Hays, twenty-one, and his best friend Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock, a 14-year-old computer specialist, are among the young military cadets chosen to serve as the crew of Earth*Star Voyager, the planet's newest interstellar vessel. The captain is blown out of an airlock and a witnessing child accepts the responsibility for taking over: While checking the repairs on an airlock, Captain Forbes finds himself trapped inside with the system set to open the airlock to space. Moments later, coming to check on the Captain, Jonathan finds him before the airlock opens. Before being blown into space,

When I hear of a space movie involving kids, my brain immediately jumps towards Earth Star Voyager [LINK] , a 1988 TV pilot by Disney. In the year 2082, the Earth deep-space exploration vessel, Vanguard Explorer, has suffered heavy damage, due to the efforts of Captain Jacob 'Jake' Brown trying to keep his ship out of the hands of mutineers led by his second-in- command, Vance Arthur. Feigning compliance, Jake attacks Vance and knocks him senseless long enough for him to get to an escape pod and launch into space. However, the cause of the damage on board the Vanguard Explorer is unknown. The German-language VHS introduces the plot: "In year 2087. The Earth is dying. They must find a new pla
