Why Stack Overflow recommends it

What it is
A Google I/O 2011 conference talk by Chris Ramsdale on using GWT and Eclipse to build mobile web apps. It covers reusing existing HTML, CSS, JavaScript and GWT skills and code for mobile devices, including form factor detection and offline-capable apps.

What you might want to do is to use request factory instead of the rpc service mechanism which does not required serializable objects. This also has a native java jar that can be used inside android environment. Here is an excellent video for using ClientFactory go implement device type gwt ui's [this video] Here is another video that was helpful for me that explains using the same request factory code for native android java and for gwt [LINK]

One thing you can consider is Spring ROO. Spring ROO provides out of box REST and GWT support but Grails is totally our of equation. I really like the ROO's REST interface. Can be easily made to work with things like jQuery's jqGrid. GWT with ROO can prove to be a pretty decent stack. ROO, although not as mature, competes in the same space as grails, but uses Java instead of Groovy. And once you pick GWT, adding jQuery would just complicate your codebase. As for mobile development support in GWT, checkout this Google I/O talk [this video]

Colin, thank you very much for such a detailed answer. I appreciate it a lot. I'm pretty new to GWT and have been watching a few of the google I/O videos for help. At this point link [this video] he talks about form factor detection and seems to suggest its done under the hood in FormFactor.gwt.xml? Or is this something you have to write yourself?

Answering my own question: 1) from command: "mvn gwt:run". 2) Google|GWT compile. P.S. As much as I am happy figuring that out (after agonizing couple of days) I would still like to know the reasons of why I have to - first lunch the app then compile it . Very strange - in my humble opinion. offtopic : This [LINK] sample app was supposed to be " offline executable [this video] " (from mobile, at the very least) - so how exactly do I test it? I tried (after running the app once or twice from mobile device, so that it will be cached) to switch to airplane mode and navigating to the app (just like he demonstrated) but, obviously(?), the server is not reachable.. Do I need to enable something specifi
