What it is
A short hands-on tutorial by Drew Smith showing how to modify the circuit board of a CM Storm Devastator keyboard so the LED backlight stays on whenever the PC is powered. This frees the Scroll Lock key, which normally doubles as the backlight toggle. It needs a soldering iron, a short piece of insulated wire and a small screwdriver, and the mod likely voids the warranty.

I`ve done the modification following his tutorial, problem fixed, about 30 min. You need to know how to solder electronic. [this video] Drew Smith

I am having the same issue with a cmstorm and made a research a whole day. Please check the following links: [LINK] [this video] In both you will find that in order to fix it you need to make hardware modifications (this will void your warranty). You will solder a cable to feed power into the backlight instead letting it wait for power coming from the scrlk button's led light when active. I tried to find a software solution but it seems there isn't any for windows. For Linux it may be possible to achieve the control through software. I hope you find this information useful.

If it is such a fancy keyboard it surely has its own drive/supplementary software, right? Did you check those settings? Oftentimes you might be able to find something there. Depending on your electric skills and toolset this [this video] might be a solution for you. Right now it doesn't seem like you will be able to have an easy fix. If it is about your parents maybe mark the key in some way using tape, a marker, a different key cap. Another option might be to use AutoIt and compile that into an exe file.

That does seem like a cheap-out way to run the switch. I found a few places that had scripts to purportedly fix the lighting issue, but many people said they didn't work. If you're willing to physically alter the keyboard, you can short two contacts on the circuit board to force the backlight to be on all the time [this video] . The ultimate answer to your question, though, seems to be that you can't disable that function in Excel.
