What it is
A short student demo from csufuav showing a solar cell detecting a laser modulated at 1 kHz in direct sunlight, with no optical filter. A 1 kHz bandpass filter rejects the unwanted frequencies, and red LEDs light when the laser signal is present.

I've been planning on putting together a laser tag system and one of the big concerns I have is that photoresistors/phototransistors have relatively small surface areas w/r/t a human body. On the other hand, solar panels have lots of surface area and the scrap ones are cheap enough to slap on a vest. I've been doing some digging and I found this video [this video] where some students at a university manage to detect a modulated laser with a solar panel. They don't mention much in the way of parameters however. I don't know if it was a consumer grade laser pointer or if it was a commercial grade laser, for example. Neither do I know if the panel was extremely sensitive or if it was just any cheap

Has anyone got an ideas about how these guys made this system? [this video] I think they are using a 555 timer to power the laser at 1kHz. But then I don't know how they are using the bandpass filter and the solar cell. I'm asking as I am involved with a similar project but I have no experience in electrical bandpass filters.

my target is detecting a laser generated with 1k frequency using a solar cell, i'm using this idea [this video] which is using a band pass filter on the solar cell to block the dc sun light and let me detect the laser, the problem is that i'm completely lost for how i would implement this in a circuit i've calculated the RLC band pass filter to have 3kohm, .22h and .1uf, which is not bad to start with [LINK] the solar panel i'm using is Mini Solar Panel 6V/250mA but as i'm inexperienced in this field i'm kinda lost, so please either gimme answers or simple schematic bunch of questions : q1- is the filter going to remove the dc volt coming from the sun and only leaves me with analog signal of 1k f

I need to detect a laser signal using a solar cell. My first problem is that all I get is a current generated from the solar cell that will vary (as I understand and correct me if I'm wrong) in it's frequency depending on what illuminates it. So to make this easier I would be using a band pass filter to only detect the laser (which I dunno how yet, just got the idea from here [this video] ) but the they mentioned it's a 1khz band pass filter which I dunno how that would only detect the 600(ish)nm laser frequency. I was also thinking about splitting down the units to cells so I would get better accuracy, but I'm still worried about the false positives. Also, trial and error won't work for me as I
