What it is
A 10-minute episode of Firebase's 'Get to know Cloud Firestore' series in which Todd Kerpelman explains how to paginate Firestore query results using limit and query cursors such as startAt and startAfter. It covers why pagination saves money and bandwidth and why cursor-by-document is safer than passing field values.

startAfter takes List of type dynamic as an input so wrap lastDoc.data['timestamp'].toDate().add(Duration(hours: 1)) inside a list [] . Also since you've the documents list handy in that function, you could you use: startAfterDocument such in: _querySnapshot = widget.messageDocRef .collection('Chat') .orderBy('timestamp', descending: true) .startAfterDocument(lastDoc) I hope that helps. Here's a good video from Firebase team on YouTube explains pagination: How Do I Paginate My Data? What you want is called pagination. I don't know about real-time databases but I do know firebase firestore provides you with tools to do that. You could check this link out for firebase firestore. [this video]

Because there are more than 5k documents in my firebase firestore database collection so i decided to do pagination using php firebase firestore library in laravel. So that i put a limit value, that is first 100 documents will be fetched then when next button clicked then i will fetch next 100 documents starting from 101-200 and continue this way. So that i need not fetch 5k documents in one call which is very slow. I was following official youtube video here [this video] about using startAt and startAfter methods as written in documentation here [LINK] , for example a next query look like this using cursors - //$document_snapshot holds the last document snapshot from previous query $nextQuery =

As in the official video suggests [this video] at 4:20, is not good idea use "startAfter" because take as argument a List of values set by orderBy, (its kinda a mess, and error-prone as the video says, check the documentation for more info) instead use startAfter Document , in which you can put an entire DocumentSnapshot, ( the last document of your first call) with this you get cero chance to get unexpected results and is easier, here is the documentation startAfterDocument method [LINK]

To use pagination in Firestore Database you can use query cursors with limit() method as mentioned in this document [LINK] . You can go through this youtube link [this video] to know more about it. You may also consider using pageSize & pageToken query parameters and nextPageToken field with Firestore REST API as mentioned in this document [LINK] to achieve pagination. There is a similar StackoverFlow thread [LINK] which may help you.

Charges is all about snapshots listener and .get , Even without showing it, For example if you have 1000 documents in collection call testCollection , Then if you run: db.collection("testCollection").onSnapshot(function(doc) {}); First time run this line charge 1000 reads, After that if you run same line again sdk will fetch data from cache and server, And only charges from those documents that have been updated, See Questions about firestore cache and reads charge [LINK] . Listview is about showing data, It does reuse view instances but not doing pagination for you, If you want to charges from those data only showed on screen, Consider use pagination [this video] .

I want to paginate my query with Firestore because I have a very large collection (more than 20k documents growing). By pagination I mean displaying an array of numbers to my user, if he clicks on one, it redirects him to a specific chunk of my collection and only fetches this chunk when he clicks. For instance, if I have 100 documents and I want to display 10 per page, I have an array of numbers from 1 to 10. Each time the user clicks, it loads 10 products. I have implemented infinite scrolling with ease thanks to the startAfter() method with this doc [LINK] on query cursors. However, trying to follow the same documentation for pagination I just don't get it. I also tried to follow this tut

Ok, I think I got what you really want. do you need to implement pagination or lazy loading? It depends on how much data you are fetching. And here you are asking about a huge amount of data so yes it's better to implement pagination or lazy loading for this data in your app. Also as Firebase Firestore charges per requests, if you fetch a lot of data you will pay for their requests. However maybe your user will check only the first 5 records and you will lose a lot of money because you are paying for those requests. why? There are many reasons but I guess most importantly to decrease memory intensive workload on your server as fetching huge amount of data will take probably some time to be ac
