Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange users link it when they need to catch shadows on an invisible ground plane or place a 3D object over a real image or video.

What it is

A five-minute Blender tutorial from Andrew Price (Blender Guru) on compositing a render onto a photographic background. It covers the shadow catcher workflow, using render passes and the compositor so the object sits convincingly in the photo.

Andrew has a tutorial about that: [this video] Its not exactly like BI shadow only material, but it has a similar effect.

Firstly, yes it is possible. There is a video made by Blender Guru that thoroughly goes through this topic of removing such plane and keeping the shadows. Link to video: Click here [this video]

You are looking for a tutorial like "match track blend" [LINK] and simpler from Blenderguru [this video] which is to comprehensive to be covered in a single answer. As you seem to be fairly new, I suggest you look through the list Resources for Blender [LINK]

Andrew Price released a nice tutorial on how to nicely put 3D objects on top of a real image: [this video] I have seen images, such as this: [LINK] which have 3D elements over images and have actual reflections from the object showing up on the wet asphalt. How can this effect be achieved using render passes (or any other way)? Here is another example (from Nathan Craddock [LINK] ): [LINK]

(Edit: I figured it out. See last screen shot) I set this up in Blender 2.78c but am using Blender Guru's video ( blender guru [this video] for the basics for the composite. The bottom lady bug renders great and I catch the shadow. The top lady bug renders semi transparent. Both lady bugs are on layer 1 and are in pass 1. The cyclinders are on layer 1 and 2 and are on pass 2. [LINK] The Rendered passes look great. But, when they hit the divide mix node, it all goes wrong. The bottom lady bug is fine but the top one gets the transparent treatment. [LINK] I tried a render with the bottom cylinder moved so that the lady bug hangs off the edge to see if the bug would go transparent. It didn't. It sta

[this video] I've followed this tutorial to the T and my end result is not showing properly for some reason. Any idea why this could be? I have looked at the numerous times this has been asked on here and google but I'm at a loss now. My end result is image 1, what I'm aiming for is number 2 and my compositor node setup is 3. If I hook the last node up to viewer instead of composite it just displays a solid colour.. [LINK] [LINK] [LINK]

Using blender 2.80 official release I want an object to cast its shadow over a plane (to show the right direction) but then i need the plane to disappear, while leaving the shadow as it was and over a background image. [LINK] In the picture i already hve the object and the plane + the image exists as a texture on an actual object. I found a video from blender guru addresing this ( [this video] ), but i'm not sure how to replicate the effect on 2.80. Any Ideas?
