Found it. Looks like my childhood memory of the movie was a little warped and inaccurate in places, but the general idea was right. The movie is Solar Crisis [LINK] (1990), and the scene I vaguely recalled is just over the 30 mins mark. I can't believe I've finally identified this after all this time :) Warning : Contains mild nudity

Could this be Solar Crisis [LINK] ? There's a scene where one of the characters stands in front of a self-driving truck. It stops and he (and his companion) climb on.

Confirmed by the querent that this is Solar Crisis [LINK] , where there is a scene where one of the characters stands in front of a self-driving truck to make it stop so he and his companion can climb on. [LINK] To stop a solar flare from destroying the Earth, Steve Kelso is tasked to drop an artificially intelligent bomb on the Sun from the spaceship Helios. Arnold Teague, who believes the danger to be overstated, attempts to sabotage the mission so he can profit from the panic.
