Why Stack Overflow recommends it

Stack Overflow users link it when someone needs to store images or files for an Android app and should use Cloud Storage and keep the download URL, rather than putting binary data in a database or on their own server.

Recommended by 3 people across 3 different months, 2018 to 2019.

What it is

A short Firecast from the official Firebase channel in which Doug Stevenson shows how to upload a file from an Android device to Firebase Storage and then download it through a unique URL. It is a getting-started walkthrough aimed at Android developers new to Firebase Storage.

As a general rule, unless you're storing fairly small icons, I'd say, "Don't do this." While you can store native binary data in Cloud Firestore you're going to run up against some limits in the database, specifically, a single document can't be more than 1 MB large. (You don't really need to Base64-encode your image.) Instead, I would store the images themselves in Cloud Storage for Firebase and then just keep the download URLs in Cloud Firestore. Cloud Storage is approximately 7x cheaper in terms of storage costs, has much larger limits in terms of maximum file size, and by grabbing these download URLs, you can take advantage of third-party libraries like Picasso and Glide that can manage

I think you should increase the perf of your server or improve the number of requests. You could also consider using Firebase Storage [this video]

Check out this Firecast [this video] on how to upload and display public image URLs on Android. You can then store this URL in the Firestore.
