Padmé gave Luke and Leia their first names before she died. This is shown in Star Wars Episode III. After Kenobi defeated Vader, and left him for dead, he took Amidala to a medical facility on Polis Massa, where she delivered twins, a boy, Luke, and a girl, Leia, whom she both named. -- [LINK] From Episode III: MEDICAL DROID: It's a boy. As you can see from timestamp 0:06 [this video] it wasn't on her while she was being scanned, but was over her while she was giving birth. The official novelisation [LINK] refers to it as a "tent" Below the opaque tent that shrouded her from chest down, a pair of surgical droids assisted with her labor. A general medical droid fussed and tinkered among the clutter of scanners and equipment. This device appears to be the outer space equivalent of medical drapes [LINK] , providing the patient with some privacy (note that she's in an otherwise exposed room with several people watching) and helping to create a sepsis-free environment.

The people closest to Leia (in-universe) and that appear later (out-of-universe) all pronounce her name the same way: LAY-uh . However, it does seem at the time A New Hope was filmed and released the pronunciation may have been; LEE-ah . Evidence: Episode III [this video] In the scene where Padme gives birth, Obi-Wan asks her to name the children. At about 0:47 in the video Leia is born. Padme clearly pronounces it LAY-uh . Episode IV [LINK] Just prior the destruction of Alderaan, Leia and Tarkin have an exchange.
