I had a really long trip to solve this tabbar-navigationbar issue, and finally found a complete explanation video. My problem was not setting title itself, it was about how to split views in right order. Hierarchy that runs well: view with UITabBarController view with UINavigationController view with anything between tab and navigation bars Then even setting self.title in third one makes it work. Nevertheless to differ tabbar title and navBar title You need to make it the way @looyao said. full step-by-step video [this video] (code may be outdated - 2009, but explanation makes it still valuable)

The following is correct according to what I have managed to dig on severals forums and documentations: Tab Bar Controller > Navigation Controller > View You do a lot just with the interface builder and then bind the TabBarItems, NavigationItems and Controllers to outlets in your code. Some doc samples: Building an iPhone App Combining Tab Bar, Navigation and Tab (YouTube) [this video] iphonedevsdk (Forum) [LINK] Add NavigationController to TabBarController (Forum Tutorial) [LINK] Good luck, you can't do much if you stick to documentation. Visit forums and look for videos.

I realized this is late, but this question is #1 on google results today and so I figured I'd add an answer. There is a great youtube video tutorial by O'Reilly that walks you through a tabbar + navigation controller app. Check it out here: [this video]

You should have the tab bar controller as the root and then launch navigation controllers when the various tabs are selected. doing it like this will resolve the problem of the dissapearing tab bar when pushing a new view controller. here's a video tutorial link text [this video] that shows what you want to do. hope it helps.

Do i use the same table view but reload it with the sub categories then some how work out when one is click that it's a sub category or is there a better method? The one big mistake when i started to write to iphone was that i created NavContoller and Tab controller separately. always create just tab contoller and then configure in this tab controller navigation controller. there is tutorial video how to do this [this video]
