Why Ask Ubuntu recommends it

Ask Ubuntu answerers point people to it when a machine boots to a black screen after an install, upgrade or graphics driver change, since it shows the GRUB nomodeset workaround.

What it is

A short 2012 tutorial from NixieDoesLinux on fixing the black screen some Ubuntu users hit after installing the then-latest release, especially on Intel HD graphics. It walks through editing GRUB boot options to get a working display and then sorting out graphics drivers.

Sounds like X isn't starting, in recovery mode you can try to update the drivers or in grub you can set it to use vesa (fall back mode) this will get you into the OS at the very least but it will be slow and not a permanent solution. This video might be helpful [this video]

You may have installed a bugged driver. I know on some GPU models, there are 3 to four different proprietary drivers to install. Which results in the black screen of Death. Similar to the black screen of death on Windows where a buggy windows update or an infection "deletes" access to the desktop. From Nixie Pixel on YouTube, she was able to do a work around. This video is from a while ago and she is using 12.04, however, it should work for 14.04. [this video]

I had this problem a long time ago. Watching this [this video] helped me, but I will try to explain it step by step. In grub press e. This will enable you to enable the grub menu. If you can't see grub, press the shift key as you are booting. To see it permanently you will have to follow these steps [LINK] . Look for the word "splash". Go to the end of that line and type "nomodeset". Next type CTRL + X to save your settings. That's it. She goes a little more in depth about how set up graphics card drivers, but it is a short video. I hope this helps.
