Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange answerers point people to it for working with fractured meshes and for Game Engine physics tips, and a question asker cites it as an example of tutorials that skip basic modeling steps.

What it is

Part 2 of a CG Cookie tutorial on Blender's Cell Fracture add-on, shown in the 2.6x era. It covers shattering an object into shards and then using the Game Engine physics and logic bricks so the shards react to a bullet passing through them. It runs about 25 minutes and is presented by a CG Cookie instructor.

There are a couple ways to get the desired result. Using the Explode [LINK] modifier. Using the Cell Fracture [LINK] add-on. Both options have a number of settings that can be defined & tweaked. Edit: Sorry I misread a little bit. Depending on how your fractures were made Part 2 [this video] of the Cell Fracture tutorial should help. Otherwise you may need to explode your mesh.

Try changing the drop down menu labeled Box under the collision bounds panel to Convex Hull , or Triangle Mesh if the first doesn't work. Also, if it is still falling through the floor, try upping the substeps from 1 to 5 under Properties Editor>World>Physics>Physics Steps:>Substeps . If none of this helps, or if it does and you want to learn more, Blender Cookie has some good game engine tips at [this video] Hope this helps and happy Blending!

In a lot of tutorials the authors start out with a custom shape that they don't explain how to make. By custom shape I mean something that isn't based on one of the primitive shapes, so no extruding, etc. A good example of what I mean is something like [this video] when he shows the bullet he made but didn't show how. I am also curious as to how to go about this with more complex shapes, like for example highly detailed models. I apologize if this is a very easy to answer question, but all of the tutorials I can find talk about advanced automatic features and completely skip the actual modeling which is what interests me most right now. To clarify, I am NOT talking about just subdividing somethin
