What it is
A short 2008 how-to from Ron Hazelton's HouseCalls series showing how to hang heavy items like mirrors and paintings on plaster walls using toggle bolts. It is a quick practical demonstration of drilling the hole and fitting the spring-loaded anchor.

Toggle bolts to grip the plywood and the 2x4. Be sure the toggle bolt is not longer than the width of your wall or else it will go through the other side of the wall, be sure you drill a good hole initially through the 2x4, drywall and plywood so the spring clamp fits though it, BUT NOT BIGGER THAN the washer that will go on the side of he 2x4. If you haven't used them before the concept is pretty simple: [this video]

i don't understand why you just didn't anchor to the studs, but you must have had some reason. sometimes the metal anchors are a little too hard for the screws, so the torque that is exerted on the screw translates into the anchor, and the anchor spins in the drywall, thus defeating the purpose of using the anchor in the first place. you can't use those anchors in those holes, however, you can get yourself some toggle bolts and put them right into those holes. they are a stronger anchor anyhow. have a look here [this video] just use plain old toggle bolts, not the plastic ones or the newfangles ones or the usb connected ones. just plain old togglebolts.

The toggles (the two things that expand on a pivot) on that holder are on backwards . The pivot end of the toggle should be facing the wall so as you push it into the wall it gets smaller to fit through the hole and once in the hole it expands bigger than the diameter of the hole and can not be pulled back through. [Edit by JGS: This means that if you ever remove the screws the toggles will fall into the wall cavity and be lost to you.] Unscrew the toggles from the bolts and turn them around, but do not screw them on all the way to the holder as they are in the photo. Just screw them on far enough that are on securely then pinch the wings of the toggles together and push them into the holes
