Rig and Animate ANYTHING in Blender
Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it
Blender Stack Exchange answerers point people to it when a rigged mesh deforms badly or the wrong parts move, since it covers automatic weights and weight painting.

What it is
A roughly 19-minute Blender tutorial by Remington Creative covering the basics of rigging and animating a 3D model. It walks through building an armature, parenting a mesh to it, weight painting, and posing bones to animate.

There's a separate procedure that needs to be done after rigging the model known as ' Weight Painting [LINK] '. More info here: [LINK] [this video]

Bones don't know how to deform the mesh until you give them instructions on how to, basically. This is done by parenting the mesh object to the armature. Select the mesh object, then the rig, and use the hotkey ctrl + P to bring up the parenting types. You should choose "with automatic wieghts". By doing this, blender calculates distances from bones to vertices of the mesh, and pretty accurately decides which bones will move which parts of the mesh. Keep in mind, you may have to paint some wieghts manually if the mesh deforms in an undesired way. Anyway, once you've parented the mesh to the armature, you can select the armature, go into pose mode, and move the bones, which should move charac

I think your problem is that the weights are automatic.... They mess up the model! I found a good tutorial about rigging and animating in Blender and at the 11 minute he starts to show how to weight paint correctly. Link of the video: [this video] I hope that helps! Bye!

I've been following this tutorial to rig my blender character [this video] and no matter what I do, my rig moves other random parts of my model. If I move one leg, the other leg follows? Something's also wrong with the hands. I've applied the mirror modifier, parented using automatic weights, I even removed the mirror modifier, duplicated the half of my model, mirrored it, then joined the two so there would be no need for a mirror modifier. No matter what I do, my rig seems to be acting up strangely. I even play around with the weight paints, but it still doesn't work! I'm assuming there's nothing wrong with my mesh and that it's something with the rig, but I don't know what. Please help! [LINK]
