Pine Trees in Geometry Nodes - Blender 3.1
Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it
Blender Stack Exchange users link it when someone asks how to generate trees or plants procedurally with varying scale and spacing, or how to build a non-instanced tree generator with variance.

What it is
A 24-minute live demonstration by Erindale in Blender 3.1 showing how to build a pine-style tree in Geometry Nodes, controlling the density and length of branches as they go up the trunk. It was recorded from a Discord screen share answering a viewer's question, so it is more of a live walkthrough than a planned tutorial.

This would be a quite complex answer and rather require a tutorial. Just search for "plants", "trees" or "flowers" and "geometry nodes" on Youtube, there are loads of tutorials. Here some examples: Pine trees in 3.1 [this video] , Plants for beginners in 3.0 [LINK] , Plant growth with fields 3.0 [LINK]

The main problem with your setup is, that you try to change the object, that shall be instantiated. The Instance on Points node will normally generate multiple instances of exactly one identical object. You cannot change the object before instantiation. Instead, you may scale, rotate or translate the instances afterwards or you may realize the instances and modify the resulting geometry. You have the option to provide a collection of elements, so that the Instance on Points node will choose one of these instances for every instantiation by choosing Pick Instance . But the principle is the same here: If you instantiate one element of this collection multiple times, every of these instances wi

so you need to build it with that in mond from the beginning. this os the geometry nodes mentality/workflow. you could try to hack your way with repeat zone, but that shortcut will cost you your performance. erin has a good video on that [this video] (it shows you how to make a try generator that has variance and not instanced...)
