Bloom+Transparency in Blender Eevee and Cycles +Export To .png
Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it
Blender Stack Exchange users link it when someone's bloom or glare disappears or looks wrong in a transparent PNG export, since it explains why and shows a working method.

What it is
A 15-minute Blender tutorial from Game Abuse Studios on why bloom or glare effects get lost when exporting transparent PNGs from Eevee and Cycles. It explains how the Add blend mode works and walks through a two-render workflow that composites the glare back onto a background in an image editor.

Thanks @moonboots for posting that video [this video] . After watching it I understood that "glare" or "bloom" is physically impossible to render correctly with an opacity layer. In simple terms, the blend mode for the glare must be add (sometimes called lighten ), and it simply cannot be emulated using transparency without looking wrong in many cases. A way to think about this is that a nice glare depends on the background, and since it isn't known in advance it cannot be rendered using opacity only. Knowing that, it's actually quite simple to separate out just the "outside" glare to a separate image in Blender, so that you can simply use it with lighten / add blend mode in the program of your c

You can't export PNG with the bloom or compositor effects and transparency, I've read that it was possible with EXR format but I couldn't make it work, perhaps someone will tell. That said there are some tricks that you can use: [this video]

Two of the three solutions are described by 'L0Lock', thanks for your effort. Abstract The issue here is that Blender doesn't consider a volume with a density of zero can possibly affect the alpha as it's a volume that doesn't "exist". Solution 1 So one way to fix that is to adapt your Principled Volume shader with some density that can be rendered: [LINK] Here I just set the density to 1 and plugged your color ramp into the Principled Volume 's color. Solution 2 Alternatively, you can keep your shader, but instead of using the alpha pass for the Alpha Over's factor, you just use the beauty pass (the full combined "image"output from the render layer node) which has its own straight alpha. It

From the screenshots, the monster and smoke are on different layers, and each layer has a transparent background. Maybe this video is helpful, though I am not sure: [this video]

I guess so, there are some tricks to solve the problem but I haven't tested any of them, maybe try that: [this video]

@joshsanfelici no EXR will not work. The correct answer is explained here: :) [this video] He also experienced the same thing as me that EXR does not work.

I have tried this thread [LINK] . I couldn't find any other threads on BSE about this problem. The fire with transparency doesn't work. I mean I can see it in the output: [LINK] But when saving ( Image > Save As ) as PNG or OpenEXR or TIFF or any other format it always gets clipped on areas where just the emissive flame is visible with no background: [LINK] When importing EXR into Blender I get: [LINK] The aforementioned thread claims to use EXR as solution but it still gets clipped when importing into Blender. The colors are even worse. What is the workaround to this? I don't want to save with black background. UPDATE : The duplicated thread is not correct as it was not Blender specific sol

I was having the same problem. But, recently, I've found this video [this video] explaining the correct workflow for the "transparent bloom" problem. Workflow in Short Render two images: 1.1. One without with the Glare effect, with transparency, and against the fully black background; 1.2. The other is a fully black silhouette of the objects being rendered with transparency. Add three layers to a GIMP document: 2.1. The lower one is the base image to which the effect should be added; 2.2. The middle one is the silhouette; 2.3. The upper one is the rendered image with the Glare effect. However, for this layer, change the Blend mode to Addition. [LINK]

I have some object which uses bloom in Eevee and as you know I can't save render result with transparent background, so I found this YT video in which the author figure out how to set it up for export with two image sequences but he had shown how to combine them in Blender. He showed how to combine them in a painting program. Here is the link to the YT video [this video] . And here is pinned YT comment from which I'm trying to reconstruct the node setup. To do this without rendering twice, just set up a separate File Output node in the compositor and feed the Alpha channel into it. Uncheck 'Use alpha' in the main composite node. Then you'll get both separate files in one render process. Then just
