(OUTDATED, SEE DESCRIPTION FOR NEW VERSION) Create Large Scale Oceans in Blender 2.8
Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it
Blender Stack Exchange users link it as the tutorial they are following when they ask about ocean modifier waves, tiling and render artifacts, and as the reference for a nicer but heavier ocean setup.
Recommended by 2 people across 2 different months, 2019 to 2021.
What it is
A 40-minute Blender 2.8 tutorial by Dylan Neill on building large-scale oceans without heavy computation. It bakes Ocean Modifier displacement maps and combines them in a custom ocean shader, covering HDRI setup, tiling fixes, flat noise patches, a second displacement layer, camera animation and compositing. The video is marked outdated in favour of a Blender 2.93 version.

Here's one approach which I think is an improvement: [LINK] What I did here was, inspired by parts of @moonboots' link to [this video] (where they do a much nicer ocean, but one that is also a lot more computation heavy): Ditch the Ocean Modifier Create a circle of 4km radius, fill type Triangle Fan Bump map the water material, input from a Noise node Blender file here: ocean-test-bumpmap.blend [LINK] Bump map can probably be tuned, suggestions welcome. It's basically a Noise bump map with a Fresnel node controlling Glossy vs Diffuse Black. Posting answer so that people can vote / comment, please do :)

I am following this tutorial: [this video] He gets the waves on the ocean but I don't. I successfully made waves on a plane but not on the circle (see video). Basically I have to tile the plane onto the circle. I have attached screenshots. [LINK] [LINK] [LINK]

I'm following this tutorial: [this video] , but I have problems during rendering as white points appear (not visible in viewport). Switching from GPU compute to CPU didn't solve, neither increasing samples from 100 to 200 (this made it worse, I think), or increasing light bounces from 3 to 12 (3 to 8 for diffuse and glossy). Denoising doesn't remove them. Source file here [LINK] . [LINK] Image blurry due to motion blur.

I just created a plane and added the ocean modifier, but it isn't showing the waves. What am I doing wrong? I am following this tutorial: [this video] [LINK]

Does anyone know of any tips to tile a plane without it being really repetitive? I'm trying to make a big ocean. I am following this tutorial: [this video] , but the way he does it isn't working. [LINK]

I re-asked this question and added all necessary files and images, so its more clear what my problem is: now u can download the textures and blend file and render and see what i'm talking about :) I followed this tutorial here: [this video] When zoomed closer to the ocean, it looks great but as soon as i zoom out wide, (what i want to do for a clip i need for my bachelors exam, it looks plasticy suddenly, it loses detail and looks horibly undetailed. like an 90's cgi scene. I want the sun reflections on the ocean but it looks way off when zoomed out.
