Nether Fortress Spawning Regions [1.4.7]
Why Arqade Stack Exchange recommends it
Gaming Stack Exchange (Arqade) answerers link it when explaining that Nether fortress mob spawning depends on hidden bounding regions rather than the fortress blocks themselves, which matters for wither skeleton farms.

What it is
A short 2012 Minecraft video by KaboPC, made with sciguyryan and Xisuma, showing exactly where mobs spawn in Nether fortresses. Using a modified ShowMonsters mod, it visualises the spawning regions and shows they are not limited to the walkways or tied to chunks containing fortress pieces.

Mobs don't just spawn anywhere in a Nether Fortress, but in particular sections of it. And even if you replace all the blocks of a Fortress, the same regions will still spawn Wither Skeletons. This video explains this: And this one shows it graphically:

If you need coal for furnaces, build a blaze spawner farm [LINK] in the nether, and use blaze rods. If you need coal for coal blocks for building, build a wither skeleton farm in the nether. Note, this is significantly more difficult than a blaze farm. No good tutorials, but wither skeleton farm science [this video] is necessary.

I'd like to build a spawning platform above the bedrock layer of the nether. If I build it over a nether fortress, will it continue to spawn wither skeletons? Um... No. If you build your platform to go through parts of the fortress (at the height the ground of the walkway are on), then sort of; as in: Only the areas that go through the original position of the nether fortress will spawn the mobs. The way nether mobs (other than Ghasts and Zombie Pigmen) such as Blazes, Wither/Regular Skeleton and Magma Cubes is that they spawn in specific regions within the Nether. As for what those "specific regions" are, they are areas that are created during Nether Fortress Generation. These areas do not
