Why Arqade Stack Exchange recommends it

Gaming Stack Exchange (Arqade) answerers point people to it for a step-by-step iron golem farm build and for the village and door mechanics behind it, such as villager counts and the 64 block spacing between villages.

Recommended by 4 people across 4 different months, 2012 to 2017.

What it is

A 46-minute Minecraft build tutorial by docm77 showing how to construct an iron golem farm, based on a design by JL2579. It walks through the pre-build, the villager spawning cells, the golem tubes and the loot collection, and is described as SMP friendly.

12 doors on a side with 4 villagers per side. The vilage 'center' is the middle point between the the 'doors' that are considered to be part of the village. The golems will spawn in the middle and fall thru. DocM has a nice tutorial on youtube [this video] describing the mechanics in detail. 20x20x8 footprint for the main cells. It could be that your layouts dont lend themselves to having a natural 'middle' Even the 2nd picture with the doors all clustered together in the middle, there might not be room for the golem to spawn because the doors are there.

Like most mobs, the easiest way is suffocation. Once you've captured your golem in a trap, just piston a block into its head and it will die very quickly. Here's a good tutorial for making such a farm:

Sorry... DocM's tutorial [this video] is easy to follow. Change it, so that they lava kills them, and drops ingots into a hopper/chest and you're done. It only takes a couple of hours to build (assuming you hvae the materials on hand). Hopefully you have more time than that in your weekend for Minecraft!

I am playing on a 1.7.x server (not sure the specific revision at the moment) that is basically vanilla with a bunch of mods. I don't run the server; I just play there. I am working on an iron farm, following docm77's design ( [this video] ). I populated one of the villager chambers from two spawn eggs, and the remaining chambers were populated from the offspring of these two initial villagers. This single platform has been working just fine, so I went to "pimp it up" (his words, not mine) and build the 2nd pod, directly above the first. I created a water elevator to move my offspring villagers, and populated the 2nd level cells. The end result is that the villagers on the 2nd level are breeding,

In an Iron Golem farming tutorial, for maximum yield it prescribed a 256 block separation. This tutorial was by docm and located on youtube: The 256 block gap is not required; it just provides maximum yield.

Zombie Sieges have been around for years. I don't think anything has changed recently to cause any issues. My iron golem farm is still working nicely. Some designs are more siege resistant than others. I've never had a problem with this design: [this video]

Yes to both of your questions. You can create separate villages as long as there are 64 blocks apart in any dimension (horizontally or vertically). Check out this video [this video] that showcases 4 villages in the corners of a vertical square. You should be able to fit 12 villages like this in your plot (in the 4 corners of the plot and 3 levels upwards).

The distance of 64 is required between doors of different villages, not the villager entities. The distance is spherical, so it applies vertically as well - see the old DocM77 iron farm tutorial for example:
