Inverse Kinematics - Blender 2.80 Fundamentals
Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it
Blender Stack Exchange answerers point people to it when rigging problems involve IK chains, such as elbows or knees bending the wrong way and missing pole targets.

What it is
A short official tutorial from the Blender channel, part of the Blender Fundamentals series produced by Dillon Gu, covering inverse kinematics in Blender 2.80. It walks through setting up IK on a character rig, including IK targets and pole targets for arms and legs.

If you have an armature ready to go, then in Object mode, select the mesh and then shift select the armature. Then press Cmd+P/Ctrl+P and parent it with automatic weights. Now you can select the armature and move the individual bones in Pose mode and the mesh should move with it. If certain bones have too much/too little influence on the mesh, you can alter it by selecting the mesh, going to Weight Paint mode, and select the bone that you want to edit in the Object Data Properties tab under Vertex Groups. It might also be useful to apply some inverse kinematics to your armature to make animation easier and more realistic. Blender has a good video tutorial on how to do that here [this video] and t

I think the issue is that you don't have a pole target. Check out this video for more information: Inverse Kinematics video [this video]

So following this tutorial below fixed my problem - [this video] its a double loop, and to fix it, I had to create a duplicate of the hand.

To add to @James_t answer, there's a good video from Blender about arm rigging including pole targets here [this video] .

I'm trying to create an IK for a model, and have tried both of the following tutorials: Blender [this video] and Royal Skies LLC [LINK] . The process I'm following, and the issue I get both times, are both shown in this video [LINK] First using the Royal Skies LLC method*, the added IK Foot does bend the knee, but the knee is only aligned in its normal rotation when the IK Foot is aligned with the knee bones own axis, with the knee and foot sticking up otherwise, and the foot not following the IK Foot bone. * removing the IK Foot bone's parent to remove the 'windmilling' effect, as shown in the Royal tutorial. [LINK] Using the method in the official Blender tutorial, the foot behaves as it's expe

I am doing my first rigging in Blender. I am following this [LINK] and this [this video] youtube videos. My armature looks like this from the front view: [LINK] When I move the inverse kinematics "target bone" up in the z-axis, it moves like seen in the screen shot below. I want the knee to move directly towards to the "pole target", but instead it slightly strays away from it. [LINK] My inverse kinematics settings are like this: [LINK] My copy constraint settings are like this: [LINK] How do I make the knee bend towards strictly to the forward direction where the target bone resides? Edit: This [LINK] is my current design file.
