Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange answerers point people to it when they need to reduce loops on a high-poly mesh without Decimate wrecking the topology.

Recommended by 3 people across 3 different months, 2017 to 2020.

What it is

A short Blender tutorial by Bryson Jack showing how to thin out dense mesh geometry quickly. It walks through selecting an edge ring, using Select > Checker Deselect, selecting the remaining edge loops, and deleting or dissolving them.

You'll probabably have to do retopology and then bake the normal information into the low poly one, in case you don't know what I'm talking just google "Bake in blender high poly to low poly" or something of the sort and you'll find plenty of tutorials on how to do it Also you could always do this too: [this video]

1 - About the mirror: you have to apply the Rotation of your object (crtl A > Apply Rotation) 2 - About the mesh of your shoe: you have too much useless edge loops, come back to an earlier version and don't apply the Subsurface and Solidify modifiers. If impossible, Decimate won't give a good topology, so you can either: Simplify with the method described in this video (ring selection, checker deselect, select edge loops, delete): [this video] Or rebuild a new shoe with retopology (create a new object and use snap to stick the vertices to the original shoe)

sorry I don't see where is the mirror problem, can you make a screenshot? About the shoe, yes it has too much edge loops, did you apply a subsurface modifier? anyway you could simplify with this method (ring selection, checker deselect, select edge loops, delete): [this video]

From MoonBoots' comment, Checker Deselect seems to be an effective solution. Ctrl+Alt+RMB over a perpendicular (non-loop) edge; Select -> Checker Deselect; Select -> Edge Loops; and delete edge loops. Under Checker Deselect, the N option determines deselect pattern (e.g. n=2 means -/+ and n=3 means -/-/+ if skip=1), and the Skip option determines number of adjacent edges to be included in that + (e.g. skip=2 means (+/+)/- and skip=3 means (+/+/+)/- if n=2). See video (does not demonstrate use of N and Skip options): [this video]

will you use a Subdivision Surface modifier? Is it supposed to look low-poly? Because you could even delete some edge loops on the box and screen... For the button, you can select ring, checker deselect, select edge loops, then dissolve, as explained here: [this video]

You could select a ring, then checker deselect, then select edge loops, then dissolve, as explained here: [this video] but there may be a faster way, could you please share your file so that we can test (share at least a part)? [LINK]

sorry, I would have had to start it all off with ctrl+alt+right click to select edge rings. Basically trying to do the following link with more shortcuts [this video]
