Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange answerers point people to it as the go-to walkthrough for rendering smoke and fire in Cycles, including the Attribute node setup.

Recommended by 6 people across 6 different months, 2014 to 2018.

What it is

A 14-minute preview of the smoke and fire support coming in Blender 2.71 for the Cycles renderer, shown in a development build. It is presented by Jonathan Lampel of Blender HD, who walks through the volume shader node setup using the density and flame attributes.

-------Update: 15.04.2014 (new link) meanwhile it is possible: HERE is an excellent tutorial explaining the smoke/fire setup in cycles in detail: [this video] For the tutorial you'll have to download a current build from [LINK] The node setup is still quite complex but I asume there will be an extra node/shader for smoke making the setup much easier in coming blender releases.

You can do it in Blender 2.71 or newer (which added support for volumetric data in Cycles). Make a group in nodes that looks like on the screenshot below. It's very important that you make the two "Attribute" nodes exactly like shown on the screenshot - "flame" lowercase and "density" lowercase - because it refers to data in the object. The material itself: Now use this material on smoke domain. That's all :) I took this setup from this video: [this video]

This may be overkill for just a small puff of dust, but for a good looking effect I would use smoke particles. You can read more about the smoke simulator here [LINK] . The documentation is kind of old and uses BI, so here [this video] is here is a video on using it in cycles.

You can assign the smoke and fire to come out of just a vertex group. Select the vertices you want the fire and smoke to come out of, and create a vertex group and assign the vertices to it: Then go to Smoke Flow advanced and use the vertex group to determine where the fire and smoke will come out of. Note : Every time you make any changes to the smoke/fire simulation you need to press Alt + A to update the simulation cache. To set up the materials and actually render your smoke in cycles watch [this video]

Thank you very much, it works! It looks like the smoke simulation may be rendered in cycles on the GPU? That's great! I also added some nodes to adjust the smoke and fire ( [LINK] ), using this tutorial: [this video] Thank you!

I can't call the result from the first image as really realistic.. at least not really worth to be reproduced. You could start from some tuts like "Blender Cycles smoke". To make smoke thicker multiply its density, see feature overview [this video] . To lighten it up several lamps (as only one lamp is not good lighting) should do the trick.

I'm having problems with the new smoke and fire features for 2.71. I have followed Jonathon Lampels tutorial [this video] but it quit working at the part where you put in the attribute node with an attribute of "density". Any idea why it's not working? I also tried the "fire" attribute as well, with no luck. Here is without connecting the attribute node. and here it is with it connected. Thanks in advance!

I downloaded the latest stable (2.71) after seeing a slightly older tutorial on smoke in cycles ( [this video] ). After adding a mesh and then hitting Space to add "Quick Smoke", I cannot get the smoke domain in the node editor to allow me to add a Volume Scatter like the tutorial. As a matter of fact, I can't find any "Attribute" nodes either. I found volume_scatter in the source code as shader options in the node editor's include files, but I can't seem to get a shader to apply to the quick smoke. Any ideas on what I'm missing? 3-days frustratedly yours, --Josh

I'm trying to follow this tutorial to make a realistic smoke simulation in Cycles: [this video] I followed his node setup to a T, yet when I plug in the flame attribute into the emission node, my uv sphere doesn't light up like in the tutorial. Am I missing a setting somewhere? [LINK]
