Tutorial: How to make Realistic Fire in Blender 2.6
Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it
Blender Stack Exchange users point people to it when they need a hands-on walkthrough of setting up and tuning smoke and fire simulations, including making fire look less chunky.

What it is
A 30-minute tutorial by Benjamin Morgan on building realistic fire in Blender 2.6 using the built-in smoke and fire simulation. It walks through setup with Quick Smoke and tweaking the simulation settings for a more convincing result.

@ChrisJohnson Here's a tutorial that I found useful when I first started with smoke and fire. It uses the quick smoke and shows how to tweak the settings. [this video]

I don't think that person is using a particle system to make the fire. There is a smoke simulation feature in Blender where the fire is actually converted to smoke and it looks much more realistic, and you don't need to use a particle system to do it. [this video]

Blender Internal is well documented in the Blender Manual [LINK] including smoke and fire domains. You will find what the settings do and how to set it up to make it work. It doesn't teach you how to put the pieces together to make a good looking fire simulation though. For that you can try Miika Hamalainen's blog [LINK] , he is the fire module owner and also wrote the code. This was part of Google Summer of Code 2012, when Blender was at version 2.65. On the blog site there are some fire examples from times when Cycles didn't even had support for volumetrics. You will find what force-fields and noise textures to set, what values to animate for nice looking fires etc. At that time it was the
