Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange users link it when answering or asking about texture painting in 2.8, especially painting bump or roughness maps alongside color.

What it is

A short Blender 2.8 tutorial by Jayanam showing how to texture a model with PBR texture painting. It adds paint slots for base color, bump (heightmap) and roughness, with the bump and roughness nodes set to non-color data.

I'm not sure what do you have in mind saying "out-of-the-box". It is mostly that way. Check here: [LINK] or here: [this video]

This video shows how to sort out normal maps to paint "bump". If you use a an alpha brush/stencil you could paint "bump" bolts etc using texture paint, adding an extra "bump layer" (video etc). If you can find the free IK-brush kit for blender that's free online somewhere, it has bolts/screws heads etc in the brushes. It may be wise to look up "normal map painting with alpha brushes" also. I expect to be able to "texture paint" in the bump-map slot on 2.8 and have my changes visually reflected -- i.e. if I paint a bump on the cube in the right-hand view, it should look like a bump immediately without changing modes. That expectation comes from this online tutorial [this video] , although it seems to be using an earlier version of 2.8 with different interface widgets. But that's not what happens: when I paint a bump in "Single Image" mode: [LINK] ... then I always get the error message shown in the top picture: "Missing Textures, detected!" However, if I switch the mode to 'Material': [LINK] ... then the brush color is reflected on the cube, but it's shown as a color change, not a c

new to Blender here so I am more than willing to accept this as user error, however I would really love to learn and figure out what I'm doing wrong. I have watched 3 separate tutorials on youtube for texture painting in 2.8, and I follow all the instructions and up until I am able to actually start painting everything seems to be in order, and then the actual painting on the object does not work, nothing shows up(on the model or in the uv map). For example I have gotten to 2:33 in this video and followed all rules and nothing comes past that! [this video] Here is a screenshot of my workstation and model unwrapped for people who might be able to visually see what I'm doing wrong! [LINK] If this i
