Why Blender Stack Exchange recommends it

Blender Stack Exchange users link it as a beginner-friendly, start-to-finish character modeling tutorial, and point to specific moments such as mirroring edges and setting up front and side references.

What it is

The first of a ten-part Blender series by Darrin Lile on modeling a character from scratch. It covers loading reference images, using the mirror modifier, and building edge flow suited to facial animation.

I have found a useful tutorial on modeling that uses box modeling. [this video] learn from it, will take awhile. Go through the whole tutorial , I think there are 10 tutorials in the whole set. Try to remember shortcut keys to speed up the workflow. Also remember to use the mirror modifier most objects in the real world have symmetry .

I took a look at your blend file. If I understand correctly you want to model a the little guy with faces. You started by the front and have trouble continuing on with the sides. I have provided you the modified blend file. Please check it out and tell me if you find anything interesting. I have fixed the extrusion you've made. It seems like you selected the wrong faces to extrude. What you need to do is select vertices you want to extrude, hit E and pull them back towards the back of the head. Again if that wasn't the answer you were looking for, don't hesitate to tell me and I will help. blender file download link [LINK] [LINK] Some tips: when extruding you can snap vectices to other verti

@Michael Nothing special, G to move vertex, E to extrude vertex, X to delete vertex, F to make edge or face, etc. The knife tool K might be also useful. There are good video tutorials for editing meshes if you are interested - like modeling this face [this video]

all I want to do is what Lile does in this tut at 7: 03. Is it just a matter of lining up to the edge then? [this video]

From all the tutorial videos I have seen so far, we will need at least a front view and a side view to properly model a character. For example, like shown in this tutorial (please fast forward to 12:43ish): [this video] What I want to achieve is: Model a character that is from a traditional Chinese shadow-play. A character like this one shown below: [LINK] Technically, those models are almost two-dimensional. If I model those shadow-play characters in 2D, it will not be possible to have this kind of turning effect (please refer to the following video, please freeze it at exactly 0:33). [LINK] I am thinking: is it possible to model those shadow-play characters as if they are made of thick papers,

I'm learning how to use blender, and have been watching this video ( [this video] ) to make a man for a game. Now this video is fairly outdated but I've been able to do everything he has so far (with the exception of putting the reference photo as a background, I instead put it as an actual 2D object), but at 11:00 he begins to take the plane that we used and pull it forwards into the 3rd direction. I can't figure out how he did this and after an hour or so and lots of research that showed nothing I am only able to move it in 2 dimensions up/down and left/right. How do you move it backwards and forwards?
